Started feeling a bit sickly on Thur. My lungs remained clear despite alot of drainage. Lost my voice after the preride and it stll eludes me.
Anyway despite some sinus pressure and the loss of my voice I was amped to race.
The preride was so much fun, just hitting jumps and taking it easy, letting the 29er flow.
Ate like a King, soaked in the hot tub, slept like a baby.
I felt a bit sluggish Sun. a.m. and was getting a bit of a cough, but I got a good warmup and told myself I felt great.
I got the hole-shot and led for a good 4 miles. When I got passed and could not sit in I realized I might have started too hard so I eased off and let the next guy by. I could not sit in with him either but Larson came up after a while and by then I was good and recovered. We swapped places about 6 times over the course of the lap. The 2nd lap he just sat on and I knew he was just waiting for the finish to come by. I felt good and knew I could outsprint him but there was a corner I didn’t see coming and he BMX’d me perfect and then there was the finish line just right there. No time to sprint.
Oh well. 4th is still pretty good.
Hosed off and headed out. Home by 7:00. No chiggers, no voice.

I knew I was going back a place when I saw Terry Tinneys # plate. In the past he has always catted down to 30-39. He has been beaten the last couple races by Larson but I knew those were anomalies of not riding much. Anyway, I know he’s been training a bit so I focused on him for my start. Terry rarely bobbles on technical terrain also so he’s a great wheel to follow.
Going into the trees it was TT, a Roady(I don’t know his name), Vaughn Cav., me, then Larson.
Cav. blew a rear tire immediately. The roady opened a gap to TT and that was all he needed to get out of sight. I rode his wheel in the first open section and waitied to see who else there was. Larson came by and I immediately got on his wheel. Roady came over and pushed me back. He then let a gap open between him and Larson. I said, “You’re not going to let another one go too, are you?” His shoulders sagged and I knew I had him. Passed him at the water handup, saw my wife and kids cheering so I waved at them and opened the throttle.
Followed Larson the whole first lap. Never saw anyone coming from behind, but I felt great and could tell Larson was struggling so I made a pass in the field before the next lap. I pinned it hoping to catch a glimpse of TT but never saw him. 2nd place felt like a win to me.
Covered in chiggers. Good times.
